Mental Health Matters

  • The Piggery 1625 West Irving Park Road Chicago, IL, 60613 United States (map)

Tweens will learn to identify and manage difficult emotions, practice self-regulation, and ask for help when needed. The session will be led by instructors from Hope For The Day, a Chicago nonprofit focused on mental health interventions to prevent a family crisis.

After the short presentation, your child can choose between two activities:

OPTION 1: A Young Men's Circle led by James Blair, a former Detroit Lion and Chicago dad, offering a space to talk about healthy choices and social challenges.

James Blair was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, in a household of eight children. Growing up, James had limited resources and faced numerous challenges but discovered a passion for football in high school, where his talent on the field set him apart. His dedication earned him a scholarship to play football at Western Michigan University, where he continued to excel. After his senior year at Western Michigan University, James achieved his dream of making it to the NFL, being an undrafted free agent to the Cincinnati Bengals and then shortly thereafter picked up by Detroit Lions. However, his promising career was cut short due to a back injury sustained during practice when he was with the Detroit Lions leading to the loss of his contract. The sudden end of his football journey was a devastating blow, and he struggled with depression as he grappled with what came next. Through resilience and self-reflection, James found peace with his circumstances and redirected his passion toward making a difference in the lives of young people, which was always his passion. James worked with youth for many years in various capacities including the YMCA, a Kalamazoo County Juvenile Detention Center, and an after-school program, using his experiences to mentor and inspire. Beyond his professional journey, James is a devoted family man. He deeply values his loved ones and cherishes the bond he shares with his siblings. He is married to his wife, Jessica, whom he has known since college, and together they have a 12-year-old son. His family remains his greatest source of strength, motivation, and joy, driving him to continue making a positive impact in the lives of others.

OPTION 2: A Q&A at NBN Salon, a local nail salon started by an 18-year old Lake View High School senior. Tweens will get a tour of the space, learn how owner Nasjlai Cruz was able to start a business at such a young age , and see a nail demo.

At just 19 years old, Nasjali is running her own nail salon, NB Nails, in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. She graduated from the high school directly across the street in 2023. Growing up in Lincoln Park, Nasjali was always drawn to art and used it as a way to express herself, especially as someone who was naturally introverted. Now, she has turned that passion into a career, combining her love for creativity with the craft of nails. Through this entrepreneurial venture journey, she has found her voice, grown more confident, and discovered a love for connecting with others. Her goal is to inspire others to chase their dreams—no matter their age.

Parent Circle (Optional)

Dr. LaTia Greer, a child and adult psychologist, will lead a casual conversation about navigating the teenage years. Any adults who are helping to raise your child are invited to join.
